A new genus and species of characid fish from the Amazon basin: the recognition of a relictual lineage of characid fishes (Ostariophysi: Cheirodontinae: Cheirodontini) Neotropical Ichthyology
Bührnheim,Cristina M.; Carvalho,Tiago P.; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Weitzman,Stanley H..
Amazonspinther dalmata, a new miniature characid from the streams of rio Purus and rio Madeira, right bank tributaries of the rio Amazonas, is described as a new genus and species of the subfamily Cheirodontinae. The unique characters of the new genus and species are the three remarkable black blotches on the base of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, the anteriormost proximal radial of the anal fin with an anteriorly extended lamina entering the abdominal cavity, and the extremely elongate caudal peduncle. The reduced number of ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays (7-9), and the hemal spines of only posterior one, two, or sometimes three caudal vertebrae directly articulating with the ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays further diagnoses the new taxon from...

A new stem fossil characid (Teleostei: Ostariophysi) from the Eocene-Oligocene of southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Weiss,Fernanda E.; Malabarba,Maria Claudia; Malabarba,Luiz R..
A new characiform is herein described from the Eocene-Oligocene sediments exposed in the Aiuruoca basin, in southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Recently, two other characid species were described for this same fossil level: †Paleotetra aiuruoca and †Paleotetra entrecorregos. The holotype of this new characiform is represented by an articulated specimen preserved as part and counterpart, in which the most anterior part of the head is missing, including the jaws. Despite the lack of the diagnostic characters from the snout, a unique combination of characters allows its differentiation from other Neotropical characiforms, raising a new genus and species: †Bryconetes enigmaticus. Among these characters are: the presence of a supraorbital, dentary with...

Alterações histológicas em placas ósseas do peixe cascudo Rineloricaria strigilata (Hensel) (Teleostei, Loricariidae) e sua freqüência no lago Guaíba, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Flores-Lopes,Fábio; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Pereira,Edson H.L.; Silva,José F. Pezzi da.
Little information is available about natural populations of fishes exposed to polluted waters in Brazil. Contaminants may be lethal or predispose fishes to sickness, being the analysis of aquatic organisms a good indicator of environmental quality. The violinha, Rineloricaria strigilata (Hensel, 1868), is a common loricariid catfish in the Guaíba lake basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and has been selected as a bioindicator for being resident, occurring in more than 50% of the samples, and by showing externally detectable neoplasies. These are characterized by its dark pigmentation, bony plates hypertrophy, and hypertrophy and irregular arrangement of the odontodes. Histology showed hypertrophied epitelial tissues, with an increased number of secretory...

Austrolebias paucisquama (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), a new species of annual killifish from southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Ferrer,Juliano; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Costa,Wilson J. E. M..
Austrolebias paucisquama is described from the rio Vacacaí drainage, a tributary to the rio Jacuí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new species belongs to the Austrolebias alexandri species-group, by sharing the apomorphic bright blue iridescence and dark gray pectoral fins in males. It is distinguished from other species of this group by having fewer scales around caudal peduncle (12) and fewer dorsal-fin rays in males (17-21). The lack of contact organs on the inner surface of the pectoral fin in males and the color pattern of females - ground color light brownish, sides of body with a variable number of relatively large dark black spots distributed mostly on posterior portion of body - distinguish A. paucisquama from all other species of the genus.

Comparative morphology of gill glands in externally fertilizing and inseminating species of cheirodontine fishes, with implications on the phylogeny of the family Characidae (Actinopterygii: Characiformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Cristina L. C. de; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Burns,John R..
The structure and form of gill gland among inseminating and externally fertilizing species of the Cheirodontinae are described under light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, and compared to other members of the family Characidae. At least one species from thirteen cheirodontine genera were analyzed, totaling seventeen species. Gill glands were found in all analyzed mature males of Cheirodontinae and were always absent in females, being located on the anteriormost portion of the lower branch of the first gill arch, extending posteriorly through a variable number of gill filaments. Gill glands of all cheirodontines and of all characid species in which this organ has been described possess the same structure, being...

Cytogenetic analysis of Astyanax laticeps (Cope, 1894) (Ostariophysi: Characidae) from the laguna dos Patos system Neotropical Ichthyology
Rosa,Renata da; Rubert,Marceléia; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Martins-Santos,Isabel Cristina; Giuliano-Caetano,Lucia.
The genus Astyanax is prominent among Characiformes, due to the large number of species found and its wide geographic distribution. In this work, Astyanax laticeps specimens from the laguna dos Patos system were cytogenetically analyzed. A diploid number of 2n = 50 chromosomes distributed into 6m+16sm+16st+12a (FN = 88) was found, without differences between males and females. A few small heterochromatin blocks were observed, besides three more conspicuous C-bands, corresponding to NORs, as confirmed by silver nitrate and CMA3 staining, FISH, and DAPI negative staining. These regions were located in a medium-sized subtelocentric and in a large subtelocentric chromosomal pair, probably because of a deletion of this region in one homologous chromosome, or...

Cytogenetic study of two species of the family Pimelodidae (Siluriformes) collected in lago Guaíba, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Treco,Fernando Rodrigo; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Giuliano-Caetano,Lucia; Dias,Ana Lúcia.
A cytogenetic study was conducted on specimens of Parapimelodus nigribarbis and Pimelodus maculatus collected in the lago Guaíba drainage, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The two species had a diploid number of 56 chromosomes, with P. nigribarbis showing a karyotype of 20m + 20sm + 4st + 12a with FN of 100, and P. maculatus showing a karyotype of 24m + 20sm + 6st + 6a with FN of 106. NORs were demonstrated in both species in only one pair of subtelocentric chromosomes, in the terminal region of the long arm, which was coincident with C- banding and CMA3 staining, while DAPI staining was negative in these regions. Parapimelodus nigribarbis had a greater number of heterochromatic bands than did P. maculatus, which were distributed mainly in the...

Descriptions of five new species of the Neotropical cichlid genus Gymnogeophagus Miranda Ribeiro, 1918 (Teleostei: Cichliformes) from the rio Uruguay drainage Neotropical Ichthyology
Malabarba,Luiz R.; Malabarba,Maria Claudia; Reis,Roberto E..
ABSTRACT Gymnogeophagus is a Neotropical cichlid genus distributed in the río Paraguay, rio Paraná and rio Uruguay drainages and also in the coastal rivers of Uruguay and southern Brazil. Its monophyly is supported by two derived features: the absence of supraneurals and the presence of a forward spine in the first dorsal-fin pterygiophore. Herein, five new species of Gymnogeophagus are described from middle to upper tributaries of the rio Uruguay drainage and from the rio Negro. All these new species belong to a clade, which includes G. gymnogenys , easily recognized by sharing two synapomorphies: the absence of an oblique bar between the dorsal border of the eye and the nape, and the possession of a black bar originating in the dorsal contour near the...
